Jalapeno pepper plant- When to pick?

I have a jalapeno pepper plant, i'm aware it tells me how many days until ripen. but jalapenos are green when young, and green when ripe, right? so when do i pick them? It's hard to determine! So please help me out, thanks!!!!!!!!!(:
