Is a journalism degree worthwhile?

I've heard journalism degrees aren't actually that good in getting you a job? would it be better to do a degree in English then get some experience in journalism? Also would it be better to do English as it has many more career possibilities so for example if I were to find out that journalism wasn't for me I wouldn't be stuck with journalism and find a different career path in English?
