Thinking of majoring in English...?

I'm thinking of majoring in English but I wanna teach so I was gonna get a teaching certificate. But I'm worried about just majoring in education, because if I do that the only thing I can do with my degree is teach(they have been laying lots of teacher off[but i do really wanna teach]). But if I major in English it gives me more options. Like say goin into journalism. Ideas, stories about experience, advice are welcome.
